Reading the Planet Through Maps

Climate change is often communicated through numbers: degrees Celsius, parts per million, gigatons of carbon, hectares of forest loss and trillions of dollars in damages. Maps translate those numbers into geography. They show the spatial logic of risk and reveal that climate change is not evenly distributed across the planet.

The final map is governance. Climate science identifies the risks, but institutions determine whether societies respond. Policies, budgets, local authorities, data systems, community participation and implementation capacity decide whether adaptation remains a document or becomes real protection on the ground.

The IPCC states that adaptation planning and implementation have progressed, but adaptation gaps persist and will continue to grow at current implementation rates. UNEP’s Emissions Gap Report similarly warns that stronger ambition and action are required to keep climate goals within reach.
