Why maritime geography matters

Maritime geography explains how seas shape national fortune, trade access, naval posture, energy security, data connectivity and international law.

Most global trade moves through maritime routes, and many states depend on ports, canals, straits, shipping lanes, offshore resources and undersea cables for economic and strategic connectivity. Maritime geography therefore turns the sea into more than physical space. It becomes a system of movement, law, commerce, energy, security and infrastructure.

For coastal states, maritime access can create trade opportunity, naval reach and resource rights. For landlocked states, dependence on transit corridors can create vulnerability. For island states, the ocean can be both a protective buffer and an exposure zone. For all states, maritime disruption can affect fuel prices, food supply chains, insurance costs, shipping delays and diplomatic pressure. UNCTAD identifies maritime transport as the backbone of international trade, while the International Maritime Organization provides the global framework for shipping safety, security and environmental regulation.12

The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea is the main international legal framework for maritime zones. It defines rules for internal waters, territorial sea, contiguous zone, exclusive economic zone, continental shelf and the high seas. These categories determine what coastal states may regulate, what resources they may claim, and what navigation rights other states retain.3

Canals, straits and chokepoints

Strategic maritime corridors are routes where global movement concentrates. Some are narrow straits, some are artificial canals, and some are alternative routes used when disruption occurs. Their importance comes from the volume of trade and energy that depends on them, the difficulty of replacing them, and the political or security risks around them.

Maritime order depends on rules

Maritime corridors are not only strategic spaces; they are legal spaces. UNCLOS governs maritime zones and navigational rights, including rules relevant to innocent passage and transit passage through straits used for international navigation.3 The IMO supports international cooperation on shipping safety, security, pollution prevention and facilitation of maritime traffic.2

Legal rules matter because they allow trade, navigation and resource use to be judged through standards rather than force alone. However, legal interpretation can be contested, especially where sovereignty claims, military operations, fishing rights, offshore energy or strategic competition overlap.
