Why maritime chokepoints matter

Maritime chokepoints are narrow passages through which large volumes of ships, energy cargoes, food, manufactured goods and strategic materials move. They are not important only because they appear on maps. They are important because modern economies depend on continuous movement. A disruption at one chokepoint can raise shipping costs, delay delivery, increase insurance premiums, force rerouting, affect energy prices and create diplomatic or military pressure.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration identifies world oil transit chokepoints as critical parts of global energy security because large volumes of petroleum and other liquids move through a small number of passages.1 UNCTAD also shows that maritime transport remains the backbone of international trade, meaning that sea route disruptions can transmit regional instability into wider economic pressure.2

A chokepoint is a narrow geographic passage where shipping, energy transport or military movement becomes concentrated. Examples include the Strait of Hormuz, Strait of Malacca, Bab el-Mandeb, Suez Canal, Panama Canal, Turkish Straits, Danish Straits and the Cape of Good Hope alternative route. Some are natural straits, while others are artificial canals. Some are governed by special treaties or international legal regimes.

International law layer

Chokepoints are legal spaces, not only strategic spaces

The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea provides the framework for maritime zones and navigation rights, including transit passage through straits used for international navigation.3 This matters because commercial vessels, warships, coastal states and flag states operate under legal rules even when political tensions rise.
